The legal department supports Oceana`s policy and legislative initiatives by providing legal advice to Oceana employees, drafting opinions, initiating strategic federal litigation, and reviewing advocacy documents. The work of the legal department mainly includes the Magnuson-Stevens Fisheries Conservation and Management Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Oceana`s campaigns focus on promoting responsible fishing, including the conservation of sharks and sea turtles. combating seafood fraud; advocating for clean offshore energy; and the expansion of offshore oil and gas drilling. The legal department is looking for one or more volunteer trainee lawyers interested in marine conservation and environmental law. Law clerks conduct legal and factual research, write research notes and legal documents, review and analyze administrative records, analyze legislation, help implement lobbying strategies, and attend court or congressional hearings. We currently have several clinical rotations open for the summer of 2017. Clerks must work for at least 10 weeks.
