The Attorney General`s Summer Internship Program is Justice`s competitive and centralized recruitment program for paid summer internships. The majority of SLIP employees are second-year law students who work at Justice during the summer between their second and third year of law. SLIP is also open to graduates who work between graduation and the start of a full-time judicial internship or legal scholarship. Government lawyers provide a wide range of legal services in government organizations nationwide. This includes working closely with ministers and decision-makers to help translate government objectives into policy; advice on existing legislation and the drafting of new legislation; defend government actions in court; Support for civil and criminal justice and criminal prosecution. Candidates can apply for competitive positions by taking public service selection exams. Nominations and promotions of competitions in new York State must be made in accordance with the principles of “performance and fitness” required by the New York State Constitution. As a general rule, an attorney who is an active member of the Bar Association of a U.S. jurisdiction and at least one year after J.D. legal or other relevant experience is suitable for an experienced attorney position. Still, some lawyer positions require more experience and additional eligibility criteria.

All positions in the competition and out-of-competition classes have minimum qualifications that are unique to each ranked title. Minimum qualifications may include any combination of the following: educational requirements; experience requirements; Licensing and/or certification requirements; specific qualification requirements; and if it is a real professional qualification, physical skills.

The qualifications for each job title are approved by the Ministry of Public Service. The Attorney General of Justice Specialization Program is Justice`s competitive and centralized recruitment program, which is the only way for new lawyers (i.e., third-year law students and students entering judicial internships, graduate law programs, or eligible scholarships) within 9 months of graduating from law school) to enter Justice in a legal position.
