Government lawyers provide a wide range of legal services in government organizations nationwide. This includes working closely with ministers and decision-makers to help translate government objectives into policy; advice on existing legislation and the drafting of new legislation; defend government actions in court; Support for civil and criminal justice and criminal prosecution. Candidates can apply for competitive positions by taking public service selection exams. Nominations and promotions of competitions in new York State must be made in accordance with the principles of “performance and fitness” required by the New York State Constitution. As a general rule, an attorney who is an active member of the Bar Association of a U.S. jurisdiction and at least one year after J.D. legal or other relevant experience is suitable for an experienced attorney position. Still, some lawyer positions require more experience and additional eligibility criteria.
